East Texas boasts so many farmers' markets that none of us have to drive very far to find luscious fruits and savory vegetables, all grown by local farmers. The markets are a great opportunity to support local business, and to get great flavor and nutrition on the table.

Here are some of the farmers' markets opening soon in East Texas; please call your local market before you go to ensure dates have not changed.

Winnsboro Farmers Market -  fresh produce from local farmers and gardeners. Some items you can buy are a large variety of vegetables, fruits, herbs, eggs, hand made and home baked goods, jams, jellies, yogurt, cheese, honey, flowers and occasionally baby chicks and turkeys. Jack Cross Pavilion, Wheeler Drive in the City Park. Saturdays from 8am to noon (or sellout). Runs April 6-November 2.

Athens Farmers Market - Special preview day on March 30 from 8 - noon. Baked goods, cheese and/or dairy, crafts, flowers, fruit, herbs, vegetables, honey, jams, jellies, preserves, plants, ready-to-eat foods.  Official open day May 4. Runs through October. 903-944-8516.

Jacksonville - The Jacksonville Farmers Market will open May 7 in Jacksonville at Sadler's Restaurant (101 S. Bonner) every Tuesday evening at 5.00.
