On September 18, 1865, John B. Stetson designed the first cowboy hat. "It kept the sun out of your eyes and off your neck. It was an umbrella. It gave you a bucket (the crown) to water your horse and a cup (the brim) to water yourself. It made a hell of a fan, which you need sometimes for a fire but more often to shunt cows this direction or that," said one early fan. Mr. Stetson was admired for his hat, which was worn by many famous Western figures, such as The Texas Rangers, Buffalo Bill Cody, Calamity Jane, the Lone Ranger, tand others. He was also well-known for his charitable donations to universities, and for building good housing, hospitals and a park for his 5,000 employees.
On September 18, 1929, Julius Myers of San Antonio died. Myers was believed to be the last of all town criers in the United States; he is reported to ride around daily on the streets of San Antonio on his horse Tootsy announcing attractions and news on his megaphone.
